BOTOX
Botox Q&A
How does BOTOX® work?
BOTOX® is an injectable neurotoxin that is used to block the nerve signal to reduce the contraction of muscles. Normally, nerve signals “tell” the muscles to contract during facial movements and expressions like smiling or frowning. When the muscles contract, they tug on the overlying skin, forming lines and creases. Over time, repeated facial expressions and movements cause these lines to become deeper. By blocking the signal, you relax and reduce the contraction of muscles that cause wrinkles that result in the overlying skin, and over time smoother skin results with continued used.
Where do you use BOTOX®?
BOTOX® is commonly used in the glabella (11's between the brows), frontalis (horizontal lines across the forehead), and crows feet. It also is used around the lips and mouth to smooth fine lines on upper lip, on the neck to treat wrinkles.
Do BOTOX® injections hurt?
BOTOX® is injected with a very fine needle and most patients report little to no discomfort during treatment.
How many injections will I need during each treatment session?
That depends on the area that’s being treated. A careful evaluation by our doctors prior to injections will determine the number and location of the injections to achieve optimal effects based on your personal treatment objectives.
How long do the results last?
The effects of BOTOX® treatments last between three to four months. Patients gradually will notice that they are able to move the muscle that was paralyzed again. Many patients find repeated treatments help soften lines and wrinkles so they can wait longer between “touch-up” treatments.
Once I start, do I need to keep “going” with it?
No! Many patients find that over time with repeated BOTOX® injections they have softened the lines and wrinkled and are able to have less injections and wait longer between appointments.
