Microneedling Q&A
What is microneedling?
Microneedling is a minimally invasive, non-surgical and non-ablative procedure for facial rejuvenation. It involves the controlled micro injury to the skin using fine needles that that puncture the skin. This creates a channel or micro-wound that triggers the body to fill these micro-wounds by producing new collagen and elastin. This boosts the skin elasticity and firmness.
What is microneedling used for?
Microneedling is a minimally invasive, non-surgical and non-ablative procedure for facial rejuvenation. It involves the controlled micro injury to the skin using fine needles that puncture the skin. This creates a channel or micro-wound that triggers the body to fill these micro-wounds by producing new collagen and elastin. This boosts the skin elasticity and firmness.
Microneedling can be used effectively for:
● Reducing fine lines and deep wrinkles
● Reducing scars caused by acne
● Fading stretch marks
● Correcting hyperpigmentation, melasma or sun damage
● Lifts and tightens the skin
● Evening skin tone
● Minimizing pore size
What is the skin needling procedure like?
The treatment is performed in the office setting and can be safely repeated every 4 to 6 weeks if needed. A numbing cream will be applied topically to the treatment area. The microneedling device punctures the skin in a cross-hatching pattern, and our physicians glides the device over the skin multiple times for best results. Your body will register that it’s been injured and begin the healing treatment. Collagen and elastin are rushed to the area, where they then rejuvenate the skin.
After the procedure, the skin will feel warm and tight, with some redness apparent. These side effects will usually subside within a matter of hours. Sun protection is recommended for several weeks afterward. Most people will begin to see results after the very first appointment, but optimal results typically require a minimum of three sessions. Microneedling can be safely repeated every 4–6 weeks until you achieve the desired results.
What are the advantages of Microneedling over other Skin Resurfacing treatments?
Microneedling is safe and effective on all types and colors of skin. It can be very effectively used in conjunction with our chemical peels for correcting a variety of skin issues. There is minimal down time, and it can produce similar results to more costly resurfacing and fractionated lasers at a much lower price.
Does Microneedling hurt?
Numbing cream is applied 30 minutes prior to treatment, so the procedure is painless and there is no downtime.
What does the aftercare of Microneedling entail?
We will provide you with our detailed custom aftercare instructions. The short answer is patients can resume normal activities almost immediately, but should stay out of the sun on the day of the treatment. There may be some initial redness and/or puffiness in the treated area, that can be covered by makeup the following day. The area is completely healed usually in two days.
